******************************************* SIAM Activity Group on Imaging Science Newsletter June, 2010 ******************************************* In this issue: I. Welcome from new officers II. SIAM Conference on Imaging Science III. Upcoming SIAG/IS prize IV. Related SIAM meetings Greetings! The new SIAG/IS officers have been busy getting organized over the past few months; this newsletter is a summary of recent activities. More information on many topics is available on the SIAG/IS website at http://siags.siam.org/siagis/ as is this newletter. I. Welcome from New Officers In January, the new officers of the SIAG/IS took over their new positions. For those who haven't heard yet, the officers are: Chair: Liliana Borcea Vice Chair: Selim Esedoglu Program Director: Jennifer Mueller Secretary: Alison Malcolm Descriptions of the responsibilities of the different officers can be found at http://siam.org/activity/operations.php. We will all serve for the next two years until the end of 2011. To help keep SIAM as a whole up to date on the Imaging Sciences Activity Group, we're pleased to announce that Samuli Siltanen has agreed to be our SIAM News Liason. In this role he will advocate for inclusion of articles of relevance to SIAGIS members in SIAM news as well as be on the lookout for appropriate topics. Please let him know if you have suggestions. We're all ready to work to maintain and enhance the active role the SIAG/IS plays in the imaging science community. Pleases don't hestiate to contact any of us with suggestions or ideas you have for improving our communication, organization or activities. II. SIAM Conference on Imaging Science A. 2010: The 5th biennial SIAM Conference on Imaging Science was held in Chicago, Illinois from April 12-14, 2010 at the Holiday Inn Chicago Mart Plaza. A total of 388 people attended the meeting and gave a total of 393 papers, more than any previous SIAM Conference on Imaging Science! A big thank you to the organizers of that meeting, in particular the program chairs Stacey Levine and Adel Faridani! The minutes of that meeting, as well as of the forward-looking panel are now available in the conferences section of the SIAG/IS website:http://siags.siam.org/siagis/ In addition, keep your eyes open for an upcoming SIAM News article covering the meeting, expected out in the next few months. B. 2012: We have not yet finalized the location for the 2012 SIAM-IS conference. The meeting is expected to be at approximately the same time of year (March-May) as past meetings. As we have not yet finalized dates, please contact the program chair, Jennifer Mueller (mueller@math.colostate.edu), if you know of any conflicting meetings already scheduled for spring 2012. III. Upcoming Prize Program Chair Liliana Borcea has asked the SIAM Board to approve a prize for the SIAG/IS. We're hoping to have this in place in time to award the first prize at the 2012 meeting. The proposed prize description follows. SIAM Activity Group on Imaging Science proposes an award for the best paper, as determined by the prize committee, on mathematical and computational aspects of imaging, broadly interpreted. This includes image formation, inverse problems in imaging, image processing, image analysis, image interpretation and understanding, computer graphics and visualization. Eligibility: The paper must be published in English, in a peer reviewed journal, with a publication date in the last four calendar years preceding the SIAM IS meeting at which the prize will be announced. (For example, for the SIAM IS meeting in 2012, the dates of eligibility are January 2007 to December 2011). The prize committee will consist of five members of the SIAG IS. They will be appointed by the SIAM President upon the recommendation of the SIAG IS chair. Either the Chair or the Vice Chair of the SIAG IS will serve as chair of the prize committee. The term of office of the prize committee will be from the date of appointment until the date of the prize award. The prize committee will be responsible for soliciting nominations for the prize from the members of the scientific community. It will also notify the SIAM President of its recommendation of a best paper award at least five months prior to the award date. This will be done with a justification and citation not to exceed 25 words that can be used in a certificate and read at the award time. Description of the award: The award will consist of a plaque and a certificate containing the award citation. If the paper has multiple co-authors, each will receive a plaque and a certificate. There will be no cash award. The award will be given every second year at the SIAM IS Conference. The chair of the SIAG IS (or the Vice Chair if the chair is not available) will present the award at the conference. At least one of the awardees is expected to attend the ceremony and to present the paper as a plenary lecture at the meeting. Such a lecture should be reserved at the meeting for this purpose. Travel expenses will be available to reimburse the speaker, as for all plenary lecturers. If there is more than one author, then only one (selected by the authors) will be reimbursed for travel expenses. There will be no prize fund. The cost of the plaques and certificates will be financed by the SIAG IS membership dues. IV.
