******************************************* SIAM Activity Group on Imaging Science Newsletter June, 2009 ******************************************* In this issue: I. Election of SIAG/IS Officers II. SIAM Conference on Imaging Science III. Other Announcements Greetings! While there will be other official communications, this will likely be the last SIAG/IS newsletter from me, as my term as Secretary expires in 203 days. Not that I'm counting. Which brings us to: I. Election of SIAG/IS Officers Fast approaching is our most important task as SIAG officers, that of choosing our replacements. Well, there are more important tasks, but if we don't choose good officers to replace us, they won't choose good officers to replace them, and before you know it Dan Quayle is Vice President. So: now is the time to stand up and serve your SIAG by suggesting someone to be on the Nominating Committee. This committee will have 4--6 members, and will be appointed shortly by SIAG/IS Chair, Luminita Vese. Suggestions for committee members and for candidates can be sent to lvese@math.ucla.edu. Feel free to suggest yourself as a candidate or for the committee, but if appointed to the Nominating Committee you may not nominate yourself. The offices are Chair, Vice Chair, Program Director, and Secretary. Terms start January 1 and run for two years. Descriptions of the responsibilities of the officers can be found at http://siam.org/activity/operations.php. II. SIAM Conference on Imaging Science A. 2010: The 5th biennial SIAM Conference on Imaging Science will be held in Chicago, Illinois from April 12-14, 2010 at the Holiday Inn Chicago Mart Plaza. Current developments in the technology of imaging have led to an explosive growth in the interdisciplinary field of imaging science. With the advent of new devices capable of seeing objects and structures not previously imagined, the reach of science and medicine has been extended in a multitude of different ways. The impact of this technology has been to generate new challenges associated with the problems of formation, acquisition, compression, transmission, analysis, and understanding of images. By their very nature, these challenges cut across the disciplines of physics, engineering, mathematics, biology, medicine, geophysics, statistics, and computer science. While the primary purpose of this conference is to focus on mathematical issues, biomedical, geophysical and other applications of imaging will also play an important role. Website (although it's a bit sparse right now): http://www.siam.org/meetings/is10/ The conference themes are: Image acquisition and formation Image restoration and reconstruction Image recognition, comparison, modeling, analysis, and understanding Compressed Sensing Inverse problems in imaging Statistical aspects in image processing Mathematics of visualization PDEs in image processing Mathematics of novel imaging methods Biomedical imaging Applications in geophysics, forensics, etc. The members of the organizing committee are: Yali Amit, University of Chicago, USA Emmanuel Candes, California Institute of Technology, USA Liliana Borcea, Rice University, USA Margaret Cheney, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, USA Michael Elad, Technion, Israel Adel Faridani (co-chair), Oregon State University, USA Stacey Levine (co-chair), Duquesne University, USA Michael Miller, Johns Hopkins University, USA Mila Nikolova, CNRS - ENS Cachan, France Ozan Oktem, Sidec Technologies, Sweden Stanley Osher, University of California, Los Angeles, USA Otmar Scherzer, University of Innsbruck, Austria B. 2012: SIAM is looking to get a head start on finding a location for the 2012 SIAM-IS conference. This will lessen constraints on availability, which played a role in the location and timing of the 2010 conference. If you have suggestions for time or place, contact SIAG/IS Program Director Stacey Levine, sel@mathcs.duq.edu. C. 2008: SIAM News printed a nice article about SIAM-IS 2008 ("Fourth SIAM Conference on Imaging Science: A Student Perspective," Volume 42, Number 3, April 2009): http://www.siam.org/news/news.php?id=1557 III. Other Announcements --- ICIAM 2011: International Congress on Industrial and Applied Mathematics, Vancouver, BC, Canada, July 18-22, 2011: We invite SIAG/IS members to propose special sessions, minisymposia, or a special track on topics relevant to imaging sciences to ICIAM 2011: http://www.iciam2011.ca/?menu_id=118&page_id=116 --- Post Doctoral Research Position The UTAustin|Portugal Program and the Department of Mathematics of the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the University of Coimbra (under the project below) invite applications for an one-year Postdoctoral Position in Computational Mathematics, beginning October 2009. The focus of the research is on imaging sciences and scientific computing. It involves variational image processing, image analysis, partial differential equations, numerical analysis, optimization, visualization, and inverse problems in imaging, with applications in medicine and emphasis on endoscopic images. Applicants should have a PhD in Mathematics or Computational Sciences and Engineering (preferably obtained after December 31, 2006). The position obeys to the Portuguese scholarship system and the corresponding salary is ~@1495 per month (tax free). No teaching duties are associated with the position. Applicants should send by email to isabelf@mat.uc.pt the following information - curriculum vitae (publication list included) - statement of research interests (one page maximum, describing concisely scientific interests) - names and email-addresses of at least two scientists willing to provide references. The deadline for applications is August 15, 2009. This position is funded by the research project UTAustin/MAT/0009/2008 (UTAustin|Portugal Program, http://www.utaustinportugal.org).
