******************************************* SIAM Activity Group on Imaging Science Newsletter April, 2008 ******************************************* In this issue: I. Welcome from your new SIAG/IS Officers II. The new SIAM Journal on Imaging Science III. Coming Up: SIAM Conference on Imaging Science IV. Call for Opportunities Available or Wanted Greetings! This is the first SIAG/IS newsletter in two years, the previous being four years before that. I hope to do better than a geometric sequence of ratio 1/2, though not for very long. This is also the first Newsletter to be sent to the new SIAG/IS moderated e-mail list, siam-imaging@siam.org. I am hoping that this list will foster greater communication among the SIAG membership, and make the Newsletter a better vehicle for information. Also serving this need will be the new SIAG/IS website, http://siags.siam.org/siagis/ For the moment, it is almost identical to the old website, which we can thank Jackie Shen for setting up. One way to thank him would be to buy his book with Tony Chan: http://www.ec-securehost.com/SIAM/ot94.html I. Welcome from your new SIAG/IS Officers In February, the results of the election for the Activity Group on Imaging Science were announced. Your new officers are: Luminita Vese, Chair Jennifer Mueller, Vice Chair Stacey Levine, Program Director Rick Chartrand, Secretary Our terms began January 1, making the first month of our terms as mistake-free as any in the history of elected office. We would like to thank the SIAG/IS membership for your support. Feel free to contact us with issues or suggestions. (Contact information available via http://siags.siam.org/siagis/welcome.html.) II. The new SIAM Journal on Imaging Sciences The long-awaited SIIMS published its first issue last month. The Editor-in-Chief is Guillermo Sapiro, whose journal-opening remarks are included below. The journal is available online for free for 2008; see http://siam.org/journals/siims.php . The following are the papers with the honor of comprising the first issue: "Efficient Reconstruction of Piecewise Constant Images Using Nonsmooth Nonconvex Minimization," Mila Nikolova, Michael K. Ng, Shuqin Zhang, and Wai-Ki Ching. "Topology Preserving Linear Filtering Applied to Medical Imaging," A. Buades, A. Chien, J. M. Morel, and S. Osher. "Cascadic Multiresolution Methods for Image Deblurring," Serena Morigi, Lothar Reichel, Fiorella Sgallari, and Andriy Shyshkov. "Edge Illumination and Imaging of Extended Reflectors," Liliana Borcea, George Papanicolaou, and Fernando Guevara Vasquez. "Segmentation under Occlusions Using Selective Shape Prior," Sheshadri R. Thiruvenkadam, Tony F. Chan, and Byung-Woo Hong. "Bregman Iterative Algorithms for $\ell_1$-Minimization with Applications to Compressed Sensing," Wotao Yin, Stanley Osher, Donald Goldfarb, and Jerome Darbon. And since he can mark the occasion better than I can, here's Guillermo's message from the first issue: Dear SIIMS Reader, It is a great pleasure and privilege to welcome you to the first issue of the SIAM Journal on Imaging Sciences. This journal, with the help of its editorial board, contributors, readers, and SIAM staff, follows the outstanding tradition of high-quality SIAM journals and will become a leading journal in the broad aspects of fundamental imaging sciences. The journal began accepting submissions in April of 2007. By the end of February 2008, SIIMS had received 88 manuscripts submitted for publication. Of these, you will find the first six accepted papers in this first all-electronic issue. Additional papers have been accepted recently and will appear in subsequent issues. The papers in this issue provide a representative glance of the diversity of topics covered by the journal, something clearly observable from the outstanding editorial board itself. A number of papers currently in the pipeline and to be published in future issues further stress the broad vision of the journal. SIIMS came to light thanks to the tremendous effort of numerous people, and I want to publicly thank them. Prof. Tony Chan worked very hard with SIAM to define this new journal. The whole SIAM staff is superb, and without them my life as editor-in-chief would be impossible. In particular, Mitch Chernoff and Cherie Trebisky have been a critical source of support. The current editorial board has been very supportive and worked very hard to guarantee timely and high-quality reviews. The whole cycle of reviewing and production has been extraordinarily fast on average; some of the papers in this issue were submitted just a few short months ago, and some in this issue were accepted less than two months ago. I appreciate very much the support of all the people involved with this journal and their hard work in making this possible. Please enjoy your reading, and we look forward to your high-quality submissions in the future. Sincerely, Guillermo Sapiro Editor-in-Chief Links to this and other relevant journals can be found at the SIAG/IS website, http://siags.siam.org/siagis. For example, another new journal is Inverse Problems and Imaging, by the American Institute of Mathematical Sciences: http://www.aimsciences.org/journals/ipi/ipi_online.jsp III. Coming Up: SIAM Conference on Imaging Science The next biennial SIAM Conference on Imaging Science will be July 7-9, in San Diego at the Town and Country. The program is now available at the conference website: http://www.siam.org/meetings/is08/ Register and book your room soon, or face being on the wrong side of I-8. (Paste 500 Hotel Cir N, San Diego, CA 92108 into Google Maps to get a sense of the area. Note the metro station and mall to the north of the hotel site.) The conference is being held in conjunction with the first part of the SIAM Annual Meeting. Its program is now available: https://www.siam.org/meetings/an08/program.php Let me call your attention to the SIAG/IS Business Meeting, July 7, 6:45 - 7:15, shortened for 2008. (Don't blink.) You can bring your ideas about how to make this a better SIAG, where to hold the next IS conference, even who should replace us as officers. (I know we just started, but all good things must come to an end.) If the San Diego sunshine appeals, the IEEE International Conference on Image Processing will be there October 12-15. If you haven't looked into IEEE events before, check out the program when it comes available in a month or two (http://www.icip08.org). A lot of good AM gets done in EE, probably more than vice versa. Other conferences can be found on the SIAG/IS website, http://siags.siam.org/siagis. IV. Call for Opportunities Available or Wanted Want to hire an Imaging Scientist (whatever that means to you)? Looking for students for your Imaging REU? Are you an Imaging Scientist, looking for that special somejob? I would like to disseminate both Opportunities Available or Opportunities Wanted to the SIAG membership and beyond. Detailed postings will go on the website, with shorter versions with links to be sent out periodically, depending on response. I may set up a web form for this, but for now, send details to me at rickc@lanl.gov. Be sure to include a deadline or expiry date. That's all from me, for now. Rick Chartrand SIAG/IS Secretary
