Message from the chair

Dear Colleagues,

The first lecture of the Seminar In the Analysis and Methods of PDE (SIAM PDE) was delivered by Sir John Ball on June 4, 2020. It was an exceptional webinar that was attended by over 270 participants! To register for future seminars, please visit
Recordings of the seminars will populate a playlist on SIAM's YouTube site:

All registrants will receive emails linking to the above playlist.

The term of the current SIAG-APDE officers, David Ambrose, Jose Carrillo, Cleopatra Christoforou, and me, expires on December 31, 2020. A nominating committee has been appointed in advance of the next election of officers. The members of the nominating committee are:

Qiang Du ([email protected]), Yekaterina Epshteyn ([email protected]), Helge Holden ([email protected]), and Dejan Slepcev ([email protected].

Please send to any of them any suggestions you may have by June 19th, preferably taking into consideration gender and geographic diversity, and a broad covering of mathematical areas relevant to our SIAG-APDE.

Further, a request to SIAM to renew our charter for two more years was submitted a couple of weeks ago.

Irene Fonseca (Chair)

Announcement: SIAM PDE Seminar

The Editorial Board of SIMA and the officers of the SIAM Activity Group on Analysis of Partial Differential Equations (SIAG/APDE) are launching the Seminar In the Analysis and Methods of PDE (SIAM PDE) to be held on the first Thursday of the month at 11:30am EDT, except in August and January. The COVID-19 pandemic and consequent social distancing call for online venues of research dissemination. This webinar will serve as a way to recognize achievements in our area, and it will be expected to help promoting the standing of both SIMA and APDE. Further, these webinars should be beneficial to mathematicians who are in relatively isolated places.

This webinar is intended to continue well beyond this social distancing period. Two types of webinars are planned:
(i) Colloquium-type webinars by outstanding speakers presenting a survey of results on a topic where critical progress was recently achieved (and not necessarily published in SIMA);
(ii) More focused seminar-like webinars based on some of the best articles accepted by SIMA.

To launch the webinar series the initial six seminars will be of the Colloquium-type (i), starting on Thursday June 4, 2020:

Thursday June 4th - Sir John Ball (Heriot-Watt University, UK)
Title: Some energy minimization problems for liquid crystals

Thursday July 2nd - Benoit Perthame (Sorbonne University, France)
Title: Multiphase models of living tissues and the Hele-Shaw limit

Thursday September 3rd - Felix Otto (Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in the Sciences, Leipzig, Germany)
Title: TBA

The talks are open to the public and, due to security reasons, all attendees have to register by following the link

The link will contain detailed information about the talks. The registration is quick (asks only for your name and email) and, once registered, you will receive an email with the link to the webinars, which is unique to you, so please do not share that email. The registration is valid for all of the talks of this webinar series, and you will receive a reminder about future talks.

Further, you will receive a follow-up email up to 7 days after each webinar, with a link to the on-demand SIAM PDE YouTube playlist recording.

For SIMA: Pierre-Emmanuel Jabin (University of Maryland, USA), Robert Lipton, SIMA Editor-in-Chief (Louisiana State University, USA), Athanasios Tzavaras (KAUST, Saudi Arabia).

For the SIAG/APDE: David Ambrose (Drexel University, USA), Jose Carrillo (University of Oxford, UK), Cleopatra Christoforou (University of Cyprus, Cyprus), Irene Fonseca (Chair) (Carnegie Mellon University, USA).

About the Activity Group

The Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) Activity Group on Analysis of Partial Differential Equations fosters activity in the analysis of partial differential equations (PDE) and enhances communication between analysts, computational scientists and the broad PDE community. The following are its goals:

  • to provide a forum where theoretical and applied researchers in the area can meet

  • to be an intellectual home for researchers in the analysis of PDE

  • to increase conference activity in PDE

  • to enhance connections between SIAM and the mathematics community

Membership in SIAM activity groups is open only to SIAM members. The SIAG/APDE membership fee is just $15.

You may join SIAM and SIAG/APDE online, by downloading an application and sending it in to SIAM, or by contacting SIAM Customer Service at +1-215-382-9800. More information is here. You can also join SIAG/APDE or any other activity group when you initiate or renew your membership.
